Full Belly Foraging

Intro Walks

Foraging is the most ancient of human activities. Though so much of the know-how of hunter-gatherers of the past has been lost, the basic skills needed to harvest from the wild are innate and easy to learn. All of us can recognize patterns, pay attention to detail, and learn to read the environment. Foraging transforms us, connects us to nature not only as observers but as participants.

Intro walks are for beginners, and for those with experience foraging who want to sharpen their skills or get to know local wild edibles better. They run 1 1/2 to 2 hours and are family friendly. Children under 12 come free, but please let us know if young kids will be joining us so we can get a head count and keep the group small for the best learning experience. When you join us for an intro walk, you'll learn to:

-
identify and harvest wild edibles and medicinals
-
identify species you should avoid
-
learn about local habitats and what useful species can likely be found there

The location for each walk will be sent to you when you register, along with other details. Also note that some walks will be in regions other than Columbia, SC, such as occasional walks that will meet in the mountains and other areas of SC and NC.

In addition to Intro Walks offered throughout the year, we're delighted to offer Wild Awareness Walks. While these walks may include some foraging, they differ from most foraging walks in that we'll focus on games and techniques for sharpening awareness skills in wild places, including tracking skills, seasonal change awareness and more! Come prepared for some movement exercises and an optional blindfold activity. Make new friends and learn to see the world in new ways.

See you in the woods!
